South-east governors plan meeting with President Tinubu to discuss Nnamdi Kanu’s detention following Peter Obi’s call for release.
Governors Peter Mbah of Enugu, Alex Otti of Abia, Prof Charles Soludo of Anambra, Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi, and Hope Uzodimma of Imo convened in Enugu on Tuesday to deliberate on arranging a meeting with President Bola Tinubu.
Their central agenda was to engage the Federal Government regarding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, currently in detention. They collectively crafted a detailed five-point communique outlining their resolutions, which included plans to implement initiatives proposed during the South-East Security and Economic Summit held in Owerri the previous September.
The official statement read: “The Forum resolved to visit Mr. President to discuss pressing issues concerning the South-East region.
“The Forum also resolved to interface with the Federal Government to secure the release of Mr. Nnamdi Kanu.”
Kanu was arrested by the Federal Government during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration in 2015 on charges of treason, stemming from his advocacy for Igbo secession from Nigeria. He was granted bail in 2017, but he had to leave the country following a military operation at his residence in Umuahia and has remained in custody since then.
