A Ghanaian chef who said he broke the world record for longest marathon cooking session has been arrested after a dispute with his sponsor.
Ebenezer Smith held a press conference on Tuesday claiming he cooked non-stop for 802 hours and 25 minutes, setting a new record. He showed a certificate he said was from Guinness World Records (GWR) confirming his achievement.
But on Wednesday, a GWR spokesperson said this wasn’t true and the certificate wasn’t from them. They also said they didn’t know about his attempt and didn’t get any application from him.
Shortly after his announcement, police in Accra, Ghana, arrested the chef due to a disagreement with his sponsor, Amadia Shopping Centre in Spintex. The sponsor accused him of breaking their contract by not telling them about the supposed record.
Many people in Ghana are shocked and disappointed about this, especially since Smith’s claim got a lot of attention earlier.
