Tragedy struck early Monday morning, July 8, when a fully loaded container truck toppled onto a female naval biker in the Iganmu area of Lagos State.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed, but officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), alongside other rescue workers, managed to retrieve her remains from the accident site. Sources in the area noted that it is a restricted zone for motorcycle operators, but enforcement by security personnel was reportedly lax.
Speaking to reporters, Hon. Sola Giwa, Director and Special Adviser to the Governor, confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred around 6:15 am at Sifax inward Iganmu Bridge in Lagos.
Giwa explained that the accident happened when the driver of a heavily loaded container truck lost control while descending Iganmu Bridge, causing the truck to overturn and crush the female biker underneath.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the truck driver was speeding and lost control, resulting in the tragic accident. The driver fled the scene upon realizing the severity of the incident.
“Immediately after the incident, LASTMA personnel called in other emergency responders, including the LASEMA Response Unit (LRU), for a rescue operation,” Giwa said
He added that the deceased’s body was taken away by personnel from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), and the containerized truck was evacuated to facilitate unimpeded vehicular movement on Iganmu Bridge. Police officers from Ijora Badia provided security during the rescue operation.
Hon. Giwa expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and cautioned truck drivers to strictly observe speed limits within and outside the state. He also advised motorcycle operators, both commercial and private, to adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations as stipulated in the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.
