Kano State Police Secure Convictions for 106 Thugs; 43 Suspects Remanded for Serious Offenses

The Kano State Police Command has announced successful convictions for 106 individuals involved in thuggery-related crimes.

These convictions were secured following arraignments in various courts at the Justice Aloma M. Muktar and Justice A. B. Wali Court complexes. According to SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the Command’s spokesperson, an additional 43 suspects accused of serious offenses such as culpable homicide, kidnapping, armed robbery, and causing grievous hurt have been remanded as their trials continue.

The arrests and subsequent legal actions were part of a concerted effort initiated on July 4, 2024, when 149 suspects were apprehended during a clearance operation at the State Headquarters in Bompai Kano. This operation, conducted within ten days of CP Salman Dogo Garba assuming office as the Commissioner of Police for Kano State, targeted individuals allegedly involved in various criminal activities.

“You will recall that on 4th of July 2024, a total of one hundred and forty-nine (149) suspects were paraded at the State Headquarters in Bompai Kano for offences of Culpable Homicide, Kidnapping, Armed Robbery and Thuggery Related Crimes following a clearance operation conducted between 24th to 4th July, 2024, ten (10) days of the assumption of duty of the newly posted Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Salman Dogo Garba,” the statement read.

All suspects were brought before the courts located in Nomand-sland and Gyadi-Gyadi Quarters, Kano, where they faced prosecution. The convictions of 106 individuals for thuggery-related offenses were announced as a significant achievement in the ongoing fight against crime in the state.

The statement added: “All the suspects were arraigned in various courts at Justice Aloma M. Mukhtar and Justice A. B. Wali Courts Complexes in Nomand-sland and Gyadi-Gyadi Quarters, Kano respectively, for prosecution.

“In a follow-up by the Command, a total of one hundred and six (106) suspects were successfully convicted for thuggery-related crimes with no option of fine, while forty-three (43) other suspects who were linked with capital offences of Culpable Homicide, Kidnapping, Armed Robbery and Causing Grievous Hurt were remanded with the trials ongoing.”

CP Salman Dogo Garba expressed appreciation to the Judiciary for their vital role in the criminal justice process, acknowledging their contributions as critical in achieving these outcomes. The Commissioner reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to combating criminal activities, urging continued cooperation from the public to ensure the safety and security of all residents in Kano State.
