Donald Trump was rushed off stage during his rally in Pennsylvania after shots were fired.
Viral photos showed the former president with blood on his face as security personnel indicated that the ‘shooter is down’.
In a statement, the U.S. Secret Service confirmed that the ‘former President is safe’.
According to Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldfinger, the shooter and one of Trump’s supporters are believed to be dead, with a possible second casualty.
He noted that the deceased individuals were reportedly ‘someone in the crowd’
The U.S. Secret Service said in a statement: “An incident occurred the evening of July 13 at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania. The Secret Service has implemented protective measures, and the former President is safe. This is now an active Secret Service investigation, and further information will be released when available.”
Attendees at the rally reportedly said they heard Secret Service agents say ‘the shooter is down’ after swarming the stage to come to the ex-president’s side.
Ronald Reagan was the last president to face an assassination attempt before shots were fired at Donald Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
When leaving the Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C. on March 30, 1981, Reagan was shot at several times and wounded when one bullet ricocheted off a vehicle and struck him under the left armpit.
Then-President Reagan spent 12 days at George Washington University Hospital before returning to the White House.
Trump, while not currently the U.S. president, is the first to face an assassination attempt since that day in 1981.
