The Argentine national team is facing widespread condemnation after a video surfaced of players appearing to sing a racist chant directed at French footballers.
The incident occurred following Argentina’s Copa America final victory over Colombia.
Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez was live-streaming the team’s celebrations when the players began singing a song notorious for its racist lyrics targeting French players. The video was abruptly ended before the most offensive part of the chant was completed.
The song, which originated during the 2022 World Cup, includes racist and homophobic slurs aimed at French players, with particular focus on Kylian Mbappe.
Social media users have vehemently denounced the players’ actions, describing them as “disgraceful,” “disgusting,” and “racist.” Despite Fernandez ending the livestream before the most explicit lyrics were heard, the video clip has sparked outrage and calls for accountability.
It’s important to note that only one member of the French World Cup squad, Eduardo Camavinga, was born in Angola.
The chant in full
‘Listen, spread the word;
They play in France, but they are all from Angola;
How nice it is! They are going to run;
They are ‘cometravas’* like f***ing Mbappé;
Their mom is Nigerian;
Their dad, Cameroonian.
But in the document …Nationality: French.’
‘Cometravas’ is a slang term that loosely translates to somebody who has sex with transgender people.
