Nigeria Drops in FIFA Rankings After World Cup Qualifiers Disappointment

Nigeria’s Super Eagles fell one spot to 39th in the latest FIFA rankings. This decline comes after their performance in the June 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where they drew against South Africa and suffered a historic first-ever defeat to Benin. This resulted in an initial eight-place drop from 30th to 38th.

While Nigeria sat out July, European and South American teams competed in major tournaments like the Copa America (won by Argentina) and the Euros (won by Spain). Argentina held onto their top spot, while Spain’s victory propelled them five places up to third globally.

The lack of activity impacted other African teams as well. Morocco dropped two spots to 14th, Senegal fell one to 19th, and Ivory Coast slipped one to 38th.

Argentina leads the world rankings, followed by France, Spain, and others. In Africa, Morocco remains on top, with Senegal, Egypt, and Cote d’Ivoire ahead of Nigeria.
