Barack Obama, the former U.S. President, has reportedly been urging President Joe Biden to reconsider his decision to seek re-election in 2024.
Despite their close friendship, Obama and Biden have spoken only once since the president’s debate setback on June 27.
According to the Washington Post, during their conversation, they acknowledged that Biden’s prospects against Donald Trump had “significantly diminished.”
Sources cited by the publication also revealed that Obama, Biden’s former boss, has been fielding calls from concerned Democrats on Capitol Hill.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), two key Democratic leaders, have privately cautioned the 81-year-old Biden about the potential for a sweeping defeat for Democrats on Election Day.
They emphasized that if Biden remains on the ticket, Democrats could not only lose the presidency but also control of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
