12-Year-Old Charged with Murder After Suffocating Cousin and Tampering with Evidence

A 12-year-old girl has been charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence in the death of her 8-year-old cousin.

According to authorities, the incident occurred on July 15th in Humboldt, Tennessee, United States. Security camera footage captured from the bedroom the girls shared allegedly shows the older child suffocating her cousin with bedding. The younger girl was reportedly sleeping in the top bunk at the time.

A relative reported to local Memphis news station WREG-TV that the girls had been arguing over an iPhone prior to the incident.

Following a review of the video evidence, authorities charged the girl with murder and tampering with evidence.

“This is one of the most disturbing violent acts we’ve ever prosecuted,” stated Gibson County District Attorney Frederick Agee. “We will be petitioning the court to try the suspect, who turns 13 soon, as an adult.” Trying the girl as an adult could result in a longer sentence.

The investigation is ongoing.
