A 72-year-old American man (identity withheld) survived a grizzly bear attack while picking huckleberries in Montana’s Flathead National Forest, USA, on Thursday, July 18.
The attack, which occurred about 2 miles north of Columbia Falls, left the man with serious injuries. However, he managed to defend himself by shooting and killing the bear with a handgun.
Wildlife officials believe the bear was a mother protecting her cubs. They are currently searching the area for the cubs. Depending on their age, they may be left in the wild to avoid euthanasia.
This incident comes on the same day Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks euthanized another adult female grizzly bear in Gardner, roughly 300 miles south. This bear had been breaking into homes and stealing food near Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming.
