A 24-year-old man, Anthony Esan, has been charged with attempted murder and possessing an offensive weapon in connection with the stabbing of a British soldier near a barracks in Gillingham, Kent, United Kingdom.
The victim, reported to be a Lieutenant-Colonel in his 40s, remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition after sustaining multiple stab wounds.
Esan was apprehended near his residence in Rochester shortly after the attack, which occurred around 5:55 pm on Tuesday near Sally Port Gardens, close to Brompton Barracks where the 1 Royal School of Military Engineering Regiment is headquartered in the United Kingdom.
He is scheduled to appear at Medway Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
General Sir Roly Walker, Head of the Army, denounced the stabbing as “horrific and unprovoked,” while Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed being “shocked and appalled” by the incident.
