Former Nigerian captain John Mikel Obi has reflected positively on his highly successful 11-year career at Chelsea. The midfielder won a plethora of trophies during his Stamford Bridge tenure, including two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, a Champions League, and a Europa League.
Prior to joining Chelsea, Mikel endured a year-long transfer saga between the Blues and Manchester United, which saw him sidelined from competitive football.
Mikel’s journey to Chelsea was far from straightforward. A protracted transfer battle between the Blues and Manchester United left him sidelined for almost a year before he finally joined Chelsea in June 2006.
The former Super Eagles captain said: “It was a massive relief. Obviously, it was going on for a year almost, I couldn’t play for any club because of the whole saga.
“But after that was settled, it was a massive relief for me and I joined the club that I really wanted to play for, which was Chelsea. And I just couldn’t wait to be unveiled as a Chelsea player, because it was taking such a long time to get settled.
“But after that was done, you know, I was happy to be here. Amazing career. Had won everything to be to be won. And my memory here is absolutely fantastic. I will never, never trade it for anything.”
