NCDC Reports Seven New Lassa Fever Cases Amid Ongoing Outbreak

Seven new cases of Lassa fever have been confirmed in Nigeria, with Edo, Bauchi, and Kogi states reporting infections between July 22 and July 28, 2024. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) announced the new cases on Friday, August 9, highlighting the ongoing battle against the viral hemorrhagic fever.

While no deaths were recorded during the latest outbreak, the overall Lassa fever situation remains concerning. Since the beginning of 2024, a total of 163 fatalities have been linked to the disease, with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 17.0%. Although slightly lower than the previous year’s CFR for the same period, this figure underscores the severity of the illness.

Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi states have been the epicenter of the outbreak, collectively accounting for 66% of confirmed cases in 2024. However, the virus has spread to 28 states across 125 local government areas, emphasizing the nationwide scope of the challenge.

The NCDC has identified several factors contributing to the persistence of Lassa fever, including delayed patient presentation, high treatment costs, inadequate medical care, poor sanitation, and low public awareness. The agency emphasized that individuals aged 31 to 40 are most at risk but noted that no healthcare workers were infected during the reporting period.

To combat the spread of Lassa fever, the NCDC is urging increased surveillance, preventive measures, and prompt reporting of symptoms. The agency is also working closely with state health authorities to coordinate response efforts and trace contacts.

The National Lassa Fever Multi-partner, Multi-sectoral Technical Working Group continues to play a crucial role in coordinating the national response to this ongoing health crisis.
