The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has initiated an investigation into a viral video showing a woman tearing up a Nigerian passport at Lagos airport.
The woman, identified as Favour Igiebor, was captured on camera verbally abusing her husband while destroying the travel document.
The incident sparked outrage online, prompting a response from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, who condemned the woman’s actions.
The NIS has announced a formal investigation into the matter, stating in a release: “The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched formal investigation, following the circulation of a video on social media, showing a female traveler [sic] destroying a Nigerian Standard Passport at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
“The individual involved has been identified as Mrs. Favour Igiebor.”

It noted that the destruction of the country’s passport constitutes a criminal offense, which may result in a prison sentence of up to one year.
