A bridge linking Mayalo, Sambawa, Gumbin-Kure, Uguwar Shuaibu, and Gandiji villages in Maiyama Local Government Area of Kebbi State collapsed on Friday due to heavy rainfall that began on Thursday night and continued into the afternoon.
A resident described the bridge as a “major transportation artery” for the affected communities, highlighting the severe impact of its collapse on economic activities, social interactions, and access to essential services.
In response to the disaster, a local government official confirmed that emergency rescue operations are underway. “They are already evacuating the stranded and displaced residents in the affected communities,” the official told the Daily Trust. “They are also evaluating the extent of the damage the collapsed bridge had caused.”
Residents of the affected communities have appealed to the government for swift action to repair and reconstruct the bridge to restore connectivity and normalcy to their economic and social activities.
