Nigerians Suffer as Fuel Shortage Spreads Across the Country

A severe petrol shortage that began in Lagos and Abuja over a month ago has now spread across Nigeria, causing widespread disruptions to economic and social activities.

Many petrol stations nationwide have closed due to insufficient supply, leading to long queues and panic buying where fuel is available. The black market has thrived, with petrol prices skyrocketing to over N1,000 per liter in some areas. A ten-liter jerrycan of petrol is now sold for as much as N12,000 on the black market. While legal fuel stations charge between N750 and N1,050 per liter, depending on location.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has attributed the shortage to distribution challenges but has not provided specific details about the cause of the prolonged crisis.
