The Abia State Government has confirmed one case of monkeypox in the state. This was disclosed by the State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing on Monday in Umuahia.
According to Kanu, the confirmed case was recorded in the Isiala Ngwa area. Out of thirteen suspected cases reported, nine tested negative, while two results are still pending. Despite the confirmed case, the Commissioner assured the public that there have been no fatalities.
To prevent the spread of the disease, Kanu urged residents to maintain good personal hygiene and observe social distancing. He also announced the establishment of a treatment center at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) in Aba.
Dr. Agozi Azodo, Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, emphasized the importance of personal hygiene in preventing the contraction of monkeypox. She also advised residents, especially farmers, to minimize contact with animals.
The State Government has expressed readiness to contain a potential outbreak of the disease and urged citizens to promptly report any suspected cases.
As part of its preparedness, the government has plans to renovate and retrofit 200 primary healthcare centers across the state within 100 days. This project is scheduled to commence in September and be completed by December.
