Labour Party presidential candidate for the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to provide detailed information about the newly acquired presidential jet and the old ones being sold off.
Obi made this request in a post on his X handle on the night of Tuesday, August 21. He emphasized that despite previous denials and the ongoing debate regarding the new presidential aircraft, the jet has now arrived in Nigeria, thanks to information obtained from a French court.
“Now that the Jet is here, can Nigerian taxpayers whose money was used to purchase it need to be privy to how much it cost and how old the aircraft is and how long its been in operation,” Obi stated.
He also called for transparency regarding the disposal of the old jets, asking for details about how many are being sold, their ages, and the reasons for their sale. Obi underscored that transparency and accountability should be central to genuine leadership.
Obi warned that the federal government risks losing respect if it fails to provide adequate information about these matters.
“A presidential jet is a major symbol of national sovereignty and state power. How much it costs to transport the president, is a major issue of public accountability. I hope that Nigerians will not be denied the right of full disclosure on the new presidential jet,” he added.
The Presidency announced on Monday, August 19, that it had acquired an Airbus A330 business jet, which was used to transport the President to France on the same day.
