Student Allegedly Killed by Boyfriend, Who Subsequently Committed Suicide

A 22-year-old final year student at North-West University (NWU), Mamohlotši Rebecca Nchabeleng, was tragically murdered by her boyfriend in South Africa.

Nchabeleng’s body was discovered in her private residence on Monday, August 19, 2024, at the Vanderbijlpark Campus. The heartbreaking discovery followed the earlier death of her boyfriend, who was found deceased in Sharpeville.

A note found near the boyfriend’s body reportedly led authorities to Nchabeleng’s location. The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding her death, but no arrests have been made.

The North-West University community in South Africa is deeply saddened by the loss of Nchabeleng, a graduating BEd student. This tragic incident has highlighted the ongoing issue of gender-based violence in South Africa.

The university has extended its condolences to Nchabeleng’s family and friends and has implemented support measures for students and staff affected by the tragedy. Counselling services are available through the Student Counseling and Development Centre.

Professor Sibusiso Chalufu, Acting Executive Director of Student Life and DVC of Vanderbijlpark Campus Operations, expressed the university’s grief.

“Our thoughts are with Mamohlotši Rebecca Nchabeleng’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” he said.

“We are committed to providing the necessary support to our students and staff as they cope with this tragic loss.”
