The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) has raised an alarm over the theft of nutrition supplements intended for malnourished children in some communities in Sokoto State.
According to Mr. Micheal Juma, UNICEF’s Chief of Field Office for Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara states, these crucial supplies are being stolen and sold on the market.
Mr. Juma made this revelation during a quarterly policymakers’ meeting held on Wednesday, August 21, in Sokoto. He explained that the nutrition supplements, which are donated and distributed to healthcare centers to improve the lives of malnourished children, are being misappropriated.
As reported by PMNews, Mr. Juma expressed his frustration over the situation, noting that corrupt individuals within the system have conspired with traders to sell the supplements to unauthorized buyers.
During investigations, UNICEF found that in designated stores, cartons of the supplements had been filled with stones and other objects to disguise the theft.
