World’s Oldest Person Maria Branyas Dies in Spain at Age 117

Maria Branyas Morera, the world’s oldest person, has passed away at the age of 117. Her family announced the sad news in a statement on social media on Tuesday, August 20.

Guinness World Records confirmed her death on Monday, August 20, noting that her passing was verified by the Gerontology Research Group. At the time of her death, Maria was the eighth-oldest person with a verifiable age, having lived 117 years and 168 days.

Maria peacefully passed away at a nursing home in Catalonia, Spain, where she had resided for the past two decades.

Maria was officially recognized as the world’s oldest woman and person overall in January 2023, following the death of Lucile Randon, who was 118 years old at the time of her passing.
