Chaos has erupted in Sabon Birni, Sokoto State, as residents riot in response to the murder of Alhaji Isa Bawa, the emir of Gobir from Gawata town.
Bawa, who was abducted along with his son while traveling to his native town of Sabon Birni near the Niger border after a meeting in Sokoto, spent three weeks in captivity. Despite a video pleading for government intervention to secure his release, Bawa died while still held.
In a bittersweet development, the son of the late Sokoto monarch has been released by the kidnappers following the payment of a ransom, the details of which remain undisclosed.
In reaction to Bawa’s death, youths in Sabon Birni have taken to the streets, burning tyres to express their anger. This unrest has led to clashes with police officers who were deployed to control the riot.
