Kidnap Kingpin Killed and Two Abductors Arrested During Rescue of Medical Students — IGP Egbetokun

Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun announced that a notorious kidnap kingpin was killed and two abductors were arrested during an operation to rescue 20 medical students.

The students had been abducted on August 15 in Benue while traveling to Enugu.

Speaking on Sunday in Abuja while handing over the rescued students to their vice-chancellors, Mr. Egbetokun confirmed that the arrested suspects are currently in custody. He noted that the rescue operation, which also freed five other passengers and two additional victims previously held by the kidnappers, was carried out on August 22 without any ransom payment.

Egbetokun reported: “I am pleased to inform you that the kingpin of this notorious gang was neutralized during an exchange of fire with our operatives. Two other members of the gang were arrested, with their weapons recovered.

“These individuals are currently in our custody where they are providing valuable information that will help in dismantling their criminal network and prevent future occurrences of such abductions.”

He described the rescue operation as complex and challenging, requiring extensive resources, physical courage, and careful planning and coordination.

Egbetokun expressed his gratitude to the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), highlighting the critical role of NSA Malam Nuhu Ribadu in the operation’s success. He also acknowledged the contributions of other security agencies and local vigilantes who were vital to the mission’s success.

Egbetokun concluded by emphasizing the importance of teamwork in achieving successful outcomes. In response, the vice-chancellors of the two universities commended the police and security agencies for rescuing the students unharmed and without a ransom.

Tanko Ishaya, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, announced that the university will address the trauma experienced by the students due to the kidnapping.
