The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a tea vendor for allegedly beating a 20-year-old man to death over a suspected theft in Dutse Local Government Area.
The spokesperson for the command, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, revealed in a statement on Monday, August 26, 2024, that the suspect, Abdulrashibu Ya’u, had accused the deceased, Hassan Garba, of stealing his bread, milk, noodles, and petrol.
According to the PPRO, Ya’u tied Garba with a rope and repeatedly struck him with a stick until he lost consciousness. The statement detailed that on August 19, 2024, at approximately 5:00 AM, the village head of Sararai village, Jigawar Tsada town in Dutse local government council reported that Abdulrashibu Ya’u, 40, had severely beaten Hassan Garba, 20, based on allegations of theft.
The patrol team responded promptly to the scene, arrested Ya’u, and transported Garba to Rasheed Shekoni Teaching Hospital for medical treatment. Unfortunately, upon arrival, the medical doctor confirmed Garba’s death. The body was examined, photographed, and later released to his relatives for burial according to Islamic rites.
During questioning at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse, Ya’u admitted that Garba’s alleged theft had deeply upset him, to the point that he had previously informed Garba’s parents without any action taken. Ya’u confessed that after apprehending Garba, he decided to tie him up and beat him in secret.
Neighbors heard Garba’s cries for help but were unable to intervene before police officers arrived. The statement concluded that once the investigation is complete, Ya’u will be diligently arraigned in court to face the full consequences of his actions.
