Renowned Nigerian singer, Onyeka Onwenu, affectionately known as the “Elegant Stallion,” was interred today, Friday, August 30, 2024, in Lagos.
The music icon passed away on July 30 at the age of 72, following a medical emergency after a performance at Dr. Stella Okoli’s birthday celebration.
The funeral service was held at the Fountain of Life Church, Ilupeju, as per the family’s wishes. A private burial followed at a vault in Ikoyi. As announced in a funeral flyer, the Service of Songs commenced at 10:00 AM, concluding at 12:00 PM. The interment took place from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
In a personal essay published in 2021, Onyeka Onwenu expressed her desire for a simple and private funeral. “Do it quickly, quietly, and privately,” she wrote. Her wishes have been honored with today’s subdued ceremony.
Onyeka Onwenu leaves behind two sons. Her legacy as a musical icon and cultural advocate will continue to inspire generations to come.
