The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has told its members to go back to work today, September 2, after a seven-day warning strike.
The strike was about the kidnapping of their colleague, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, which happened on December 27, 2023.
Popoola, a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, was taken along with her husband and nephew. Her husband was freed in March, but Popoola and her nephew are still held captive.
NARD started the seven-day strike on Monday, August 26, to push for Popoola’s rescue.
On Thursday, August 29, the Federal Government warned that it might use the “no work, no pay” policy against the striking doctors. The doctors, however, were not affected by the threat.
The doctors have now resumed work. NARD said it will review the Federal Government’s progress on their demands in the next three weeks.
