Son of Late Former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe Arrested for Assaulting Policeman

Chatunga Bellarmine Mugabe, son of the late former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, was arrested in Beitbridge, Zimbabwe, for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

The incident happened early in the morning at a roadblock in Bubi, about 80 kilometers north of Beitbridge.

NewsDay reports that the altercation occurred around 6:00 a.m. when Chatunga, driven by a Chinese driver, arrived at the roadblock. The confrontation started when police asked for vehicle documents, which made Chatunga angry.

“He started shouting at the police, saying, ‘You are delaying us, do you know who I am?’” sources said. During the incident, Chatunga allegedly grabbed a Support Unit officer by the collar, tearing off his shirt buttons. He is also said to have brandished an Okapi knife before the police subdued and arrested him.

Chief Superintendent Mesuli Ncube, the officer in charge of Beitbridge Police District, confirmed Chatunga’s arrest but mentioned he had few details about the case.

“I have just heard he was arrested, but I am not in the office,” Ncube said.

This incident adds to Chatunga Mugabe’s history of legal issues. In 2023, he and his friend Tatenda Chinyuku were arrested for assaulting Lazarus Dairamanzi and damaging his Nissan NP300 by smashing its window. They faced charges of assault and malicious damage to property.

Chatunga’s older brother, Robert Junior, also had legal problems last February. He was arrested after causing a scene at a party, smashing cars and other property following a dispute with the party host.
