A Nigerian man was sentenced to five years in prison for his role in a computer hacking scheme in the United States.
According to Peoples Gazette, Franklin Ifeanyichukwu Okwonna, 34, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.
His co-defendant, Ebuka Raphael Umeti, 35, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the same crimes.
The report states that the defendants and their co-conspirators used phishing emails to infect victims’ computers with malware. They then stole sensitive information and tricked victims into sending money to accounts controlled by the conspirators.
The scheme caused over $5 million in losses to multiple victims in the United States and other places.
According to the Peoples Gazette, the FBI Washington Field Office investigated the case.
