A 55-year-old sugarcane seller, Sulaiman Potiskum, has died after being swept away by a river in Gada, Bakin Kogi, in the Hadejia Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The spokesperson for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Jigawa State Command, ASC Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmud, said the tragic incident happened on Saturday, September 7, 2024, around 9:45 a.m.
Sulaiman was trying to bathe along the riverbank when he was overcome by the floodwaters.
The PPRO said: “Despite the swift response from the NSCDC search and rescue operatives and local divers, his life could not be saved as he was pronounced dead upon reaching the General Hospital Hadejia by a medical practitioner.
“His body was handed over to his relatives for proper burial according to Islamic injunctions.
“It may be recalled that recently, drowning incident is on the increase and as such the Command warned against swimming in flooded rivers and ponds as they constitute threats to lives.”
