Many people escaped death on Saturday when a tanker carrying fuel burst into flames at Ajia junction on the Ibadan-Ife Road.
The tanker driver was trying to change lanes when the fire started around 4:45 PM. A small truck, a bus, a car, a motorcycle, and two bikes were burned.
A witness, Biodun Ayoola, told reporters that everyone in the vehicles and on the bikes ran away when they saw the tanker on fire. Mr. Ayoola said that a pedestrian bridge was being built, so one lane was closed and cars had to use the other.
“The petrol tanker caught fire while trying to link the other lane and exploded,” he said. “But we thank God that all the occupants of the affected vehicles and motorcycles escaped from the scene before the explosion.”
Mayowa Odewo, the FRSC spokesperson in Oyo State, confirmed the incident. Mr. Odewo said that FRSC officers were still at the scene and would release a statement later.
