The Benue State Government has sounded the alarm over the increasing presence of snakes in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps across the state.
James Iorpuu, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), revealed the alarming situation during a relief material distribution event on Wednesday.
He disclosed that over 15 displaced persons have required medical treatment for snake bites in recent times, with the cost of treatment amounting to millions of naira.
Iorpuu said, “In recent months, Benue-SEMA has faced the tragic challenge of snake bites among our IDP populations. I am pleased to report that we have successfully treated over 15 cases across various camps, thanks to the swift action of our health teams and the support from our partners.”
To address the problem, Iorpuu revealed that all camps, including Ikyogen, have been fumigated. He appealed for continued support from both local and international partners to combat the threat of snake bites in these vulnerable communities.
In addition to the snake bite crisis, Iorpuu announced that the World Bank would soon begin constructing 50 shelter units in Nyihemba, Kwande LGA. He also revealed plans for the agency to initiate IDP farm projects in Kwande, Logo, and Gwer-West local government areas.
