A gas explosion has tragically claimed the lives of a couple, identified as Chioma and George, in Abakiliki, the capital of Ebonyi State.
The Ebonyi State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the incident on Thursday, September 12, 2024. Initial reports had speculated that the couple died due to an explosion involving dynamite or an inverter battery, but subsequent investigations revealed the cause to be a gas leak.
Chioma passed away five days after the explosion, while her husband succumbed to his injuries on September 11 in a hospital. The couple had recently moved into their new residence in Abakiliki.
The police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the gas explosion.
