Staff of Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, expressed immense joy on Friday, September 13, 2024, following the payment of their long-overdue salary arrears.
This development marks a significant step towards fulfilling a promise made by the Abia State government in June. The government had announced plans to clear the N16.5 billion in salary arrears owed to employees of state-owned higher education institutions.
The Finance Commissioner, Mr. Mike Akpara, confirmed the payment, assuring that the government would also address salary arrears owed to some state civil servants in phases.
Akpara explained that the current administration inherited a substantial debt burden and is committed to resolving it without compromising progress in other sectors.
The first batch of staff to receive their arrears were visibly elated.
A video shared online captured their heartfelt gratitude, including kneeling in prayers to thank God and their state governor.
