Mpox Cases in Nigeria: Males Predominantly Affected

According to data released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), men constitute the majority of Mpox cases in the country.

As of September 2024, approximately 70% of the 6,001 suspected and confirmed Mpox cases recorded since 2017 were in males.

A total of 1,031 suspected cases have been reported across 47 local government areas in 23 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with 67 confirmed cases in 2024.

The NCDC’s figures, published on Monday, September 16, revealed that children under five years old are the most affected age group, followed by those aged 26-30 and 46-50. In 2024 alone, 15 of the 64 confirmed cases were in children under five.

Mpox, a viral disease transmitted through close contact, can cause a rash, fever, and swollen lymph nodes. The NCDC continues to monitor the situation and urges the public to be vigilant and practice good hygiene to prevent the spread of the disease.
