Two women, Ujunwa Una and Chinelo Igbechionwu, have been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly trafficking six-day-old twin babies.
According to a press release issued on Friday, the suspects were apprehended in the Berger area of Lagos after transporting the babies from Abia State for N150,000. The arrest was made following a tip-off from a concerned citizen.
The police investigation revealed that the suspects were on their way to deliver the babies to a nurse in Lagos, as arranged by the babies’ mother. The mother, unable to provide adequate care, had sold the twins.
The police spokesperson said: “The suspects were found with two newborn baby girls, approximately six-day-old, while travelling from Abia State on September 9, 2024.
“The suspects were en route to deliver the babies to one nurse in Lagos State whom the mother of the babies promised to link them up with only after they had arrived Lagos.”
“Upon questioning, the suspects confessed to the crime, stating that they were paid the sum of One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (₦150,000) for transportation of the babies to Lagos. The suspects added that the mother of the babies sold the babies because she could not give them proper care.”
The suspects confessed to the crime and were subsequently arraigned on Thursday.
The babies were placed in a motherless babies’ home, and efforts are underway to apprehend the other individuals involved in the trafficking scheme.
