Thousands of victims of ongoing demolitions in Ibadan, Oyo State, led by the African Action Congress (AAC), have staged a massive protest against the state government under Governor Seyi Makinde.
The protesters stormed the state government secretariat, demanding an end to the demolitions, which have reportedly resulted in dozens of deaths and displaced thousands of residents.
The demolitions, aimed at acquiring land for the Ibadan Circular Roads Project, have been widely criticized as excessive and inhumane.
Affected residents claim that over 300,000 people have been displaced and scores have been killed as a result of the government’s actions.
The protesters accused Governor Makinde of using the project to acquire land for personal gain and benefit his cronies. They called on the state house of assembly, the Olubadan of Ibadan, and other stakeholders to intervene and hold the governor accountable.
The residents demand that the governor adhere to the original plan for the Circular Road and halt the demolitions.
The statement was released by concerned residents from six out of the eleven local government areas in Ibadan.
