The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has ordered an immediate investigation into bribery allegations made by Idris Okuneye (a.k.a. Bobrisky) in a viral audio released on September 24 by social activist Very Dark Man.
In the audio, Bobrisky claims to have paid N15,000,000 (Fifteen Million Naira) to unnamed EFCC officials to drop money laundering charges against him.
Earlier, the EFCC filed six charges against Bobrisky in April related to Naira abuse and money laundering. While four charges pertained to Naira abuse, two were related to money laundering. Ultimately, the money laundering charges were dropped, and he was arraigned on four counts of Naira abuse, resulting in a six-month jail sentence after his conviction on April 12.
In the audio, Bobrisky also alleged that a powerful associate intervened on his behalf to keep him in a private apartment near the correctional facility, preventing him from serving his sentence as directed by the court.
In response to the allegations against EFCC operatives, spokesperson Dele Oyewale announced that the Commission’s chairman has assembled a team of investigators to thoroughly examine the claims.
Oyewale said: ‘’To this end, the Commission hereby invites both Okuneye and Otse to make themselves available at its Lagos Directorate to assist investigators unearth the alleged bribery.
“The EFCC wishes to assure the public that the allegations would be thoroughly investigated and the result of the findings made public accordingly. The Commission is committed to its core values of integrity, courage, professionalism and collaboration at all times.”
