The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has reported one fatality and two individuals missing following a flood incident in the Joyce-B/Mobil area of Ibadan.
Kadir Olanrewaju, NEMA’s South-West Coordinator, shared this information with reporters on Wednesday while assessing the damage at the site.
Heavy rainfall on Tuesday evening impacted several residential areas in Ibadan, causing extensive property damage. Olanrewaju attributed the flooding to inadequate drainage systems, stating that the volume of water exceeded the capacity of available channels.

He noted that the flood reached gate level, describing the area as a flash flood zone that could face severe disasters if not addressed promptly.
“People need to move away from this place because if we have another rain, the flood will be devastating; you can see that the lower parts of most of the buildings and the fences are weak,” he warned.
Resident Mr. Solomon Agboro reported that the flood inundated his ground floor, forcing his family to seek refuge upstairs. He called for government intervention to improve drainage in the area, as the flood destroyed all his ground-floor possessions.

Another resident, Oni Bishola, who has lived in the area for four years, stated that while flooding occurs annually, Tuesday’s was the worst she had experienced. She lamented the loss of household items, including gas cookers, televisions, and mattresses, and urged local authorities and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to implement proper drainage solutions.
NAN also noted that the fence of a building under construction near Calvary Heritage School in the Felele area collapsed due to the flooding.
At the Idi-Odo junction, the front of FCMB was flooded, hindering vehicle movement due to inadequate drainage. Several roads in the Ring Road area were similarly affected by the heavy downpour.
