UEFA Reopens Bidding for 2027 Men’s Champions League Final After San Siro Withdrawal

UEFA has announced that it will reopen the bidding process to host the 2027 men’s Champions League final.

The decision comes after the prestigious match was initially awarded to the iconic San Siro stadium in Milan, Italy, but was subsequently withdrawn due to concerns about ongoing refurbishment work.

European football’s governing body had previously postponed a decision on the 2027 final host, awaiting assurances from Milan authorities regarding the completion of stadium renovations and surrounding infrastructure. However, the city was unable to provide the necessary guarantees.

UEFA’s statement indicated that a new host for the final is expected to be selected by May or June of next year.

UEFA said in a statement: “As the Municipality of Milano could not guarantee that the San Siro stadium and its surroundings would not be affected by refurbishment works in the period of the 2027 UEFA Champions League final, it was decided not to assign the final to Milan and to re-open the bidding process to appoint a suitable venue, with a decision expected in May/June 2025.”

In addition to the decision on the 2027 final, UEFA has reached an agreement on solidarity funding. Premier League clubs that do not participate in European competitions will receive a smaller share of the funding over the next three seasons compared to previous arrangements.

The San Siro stadium has previously hosted the Champions League final twice, most recently in 2016 when Real Madrid defeated Atletico Madrid in a penalty shootout.
