Protests erupted at the Peoples Democratic Party secretariat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday as tensions escalated ahead of the Local Government election set for October 5, 2024.
Large crowds of protesters gathered at the party’s headquarters, prompting security personnel to intervene to control the situation and manage traffic congestion, according to reports from Channels Television.
The unrest stems from mounting concerns over the delay in the release of the 2023 Voters’ Register by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).
It was previously reported that on September 30, 2024, Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled against INEC releasing the voters’ register to RSIEC due to ongoing legal challenges.
Despite this court ruling, Governor Siminalayi Fubara affirmed that the election would proceed as scheduled.
He expressed confidence in the Supreme Court’s earlier decision, which mandated that all states must have democratically elected local government executives, bolstering his stance.
