Tragedy Strikes Lagos as Two Boats Capsize, 20 Feared Dead

A devastating maritime accident occurred in Lagos State on Monday evening, October 7, as two passenger boats capsized in Imore Lagoon. The incident resulted in the tragic loss of at least 20 lives.

The boats, each carrying 16 passengers, collided around 7 PM, causing them to sink. While the exact departure and destination points remain unclear, authorities confirmed that 11 individuals were rescued from the water.

Police spokesperson SP Benjamin Hundeyin revealed that the boats were unregistered and that a report of the accident was filed at the Ilashe Police Division. He stated that all 32 passengers and their belongings were initially presumed lost in the capsizing.

Thanks to the combined efforts of police, local divers, and emergency responders, 11 survivors were pulled from the water. Those rescued sustained injuries and were immediately transported to the Naval Town Hospital in Ojo for medical treatment.

Search and rescue operations continued for the remaining victims, with authorities working tirelessly to recover any bodies or additional survivors from the lagoon.
