Brazil’s Supreme Court on Tuesday lifted a ban on Elon Musk’s social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), after the company complied with court orders and paid millions in fines.
The platform had been blocked in Brazil for over a month due to allegations of spreading disinformation during the 2022 election campaign. Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who had imposed the ban, authorized its immediate reversal following X’s compliance.
The standoff between Moraes and Musk escalated in August when the judge blocked X for failing to remove right-wing accounts accused of spreading false information.
Musk had publicly criticized Moraes, but X ultimately agreed to all of the judge’s demands, including paying fines of approximately $5.2 million.
The case, closely followed worldwide, has significant implications for freedom of expression and corporate responsibility. With the suspension lifted, X is now operational again in Brazil.
