Thirteen former Boko Haram fighters have reportedly escaped from a military camp in Borno State, taking with them rifles and motorcycles provided by the government.
According to Premium Times, the escapees were among thousands of ex-Boko Haram members and their families who had surrendered to the authorities and were subsequently enrolled into the military to combat the insurgency.
The escape occurred between September 1st and 2nd in the Mafa area.
Researcher Malik Samuel, an expert on jihadist groups in northeastern Nigeria and the Lake Chad region, stated that eight fighters initially fled the camp on September 1st, followed by five more the next day.
Samuel added that the escapees, led by Abdullahi Ishaq, a government security advisor, threatened further violence. Following their escape, the jubilant terrorists reportedly released a video showcasing their stolen weapons.
The Borno State government has not yet issued a public statement regarding this incident.
