The Borno State Police Command has recaptured a convict who escaped from a correctional facility during the recent floods in Maiduguri.
Kyari Kur, also known as Henry, was arrested in Gubio town following a tip-off from the public.
The 28-year-old convict escaped from the facility during the heavy rains that caused widespread flooding in the state capital.
The police statement read: “Kyari Kur was serving a jail term for criminal conspiracy and theft at the Medium Security Custodian Center in Maiduguri. Unfortunately, he escaped due to the devastating flood incident in September 2024, which collapsed the fence.
“On October 10, 2024, police surveillance at Gubio divisional headquarters received a credible tip-off that Kur was sighted in Gubio town. Swiftly responding to the information, the police apprehended Kur.
“The convict has been profiled and will be handed over to the Nigeria Correctional Service for further action.”
The State Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Lawal Yusufu, reaffirmed the command’s dedication to safeguarding public safety and upholding justice.
“We appreciate the public’s cooperation and urge them to continue providing timely information,” the CP said.
The police command urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or information about fugitives to the nearest police station or through the provided contact numbers: 0806 807 5581 and 0802 347 3293.
