Court Begins Trial of Four South African Policemen Who Robbed Nigerian Man of R20 Million Jewelry

The South African government has begun the prosecution of four policemen who robbed a Nigerian rapper of jewelry worth R20 million (approximately N1.9 billion).

The suspects—Jacobus Groenewald, Bradley Minnaar, Mthuthuzeli Mafanya, and Bathandwa Soldati—allegedly invaded the victim’s residence in Llandudno, Cape Town, on September 14, claiming to search for a “wanted Nigerian.”

Instead of conducting a legitimate search, they stole valuable items, including Rolex watches, gold bracelets, emeralds, and ivory pieces.

The SAPS Anti-Corruption Unit apprehended the officers, who are reportedly part of a larger group of eight using their uniforms and vehicles to rob individuals in the upscale neighborhood.

Reports indicate that the officers left behind fingerprints at the scene, further implicating them in the robbery. The case has raised concerns about the abuse of authority by law enforcement. All four suspects appeared in Wynberg Magistrate’s Court last Thursday, facing charges of aggravated robbery.
