Former Chelsea defender William Gallas believes Cole Palmer may consider joining Barcelona if the Blues fail to win a trophy this season.
Gallas feels that Palmer might look to leave Chelsea if the team under Enzo Maresca does not show signs of improvement and trophy contention. He emphasized that Palmer would likely be unhappy watching his England teammates celebrate victories while he remains trophy-less, especially if he continues to perform well. Gallas also suggested that Barcelona would be a fitting destination for the young midfielder.
He stated: “Cole Palmer might want to leave Chelsea in the future if they don’t demonstrate the ability to win trophies. Barcelona would be a great move for him, but they already have talented young players like Lamine Yamal and may also be signing Nico Williams.”
Gallas noted that Palmer seems set for a season similar to the last and, despite his youth, it would be difficult for him to see his friends winning trophies while he remains at Chelsea without success. He added: “I won’t be surprised if he wants to speak to Chelsea in the summer if they again fail to win a trophy. He will want to know clearly what their targets are.”
However, there are no signs that Palmer is actively seeking a move away from Chelsea to Barcelona, despite Gallas’ comments. The English midfielder signed a long-term contract upon joining the Blues and renewed his terms this summer. With his contract running until 2033, it would take a significant offer for Barcelona to lure him away.
Palmer is currently on international duty with England but will return to Chelsea this week. He will be part of the squad traveling to Anfield next Sunday, aiming to build on the positive momentum from the start of the season.
