On Monday, a Federal High Court in Kano State sentenced 33-year-old Nasiru Isa to seven years in a correctional center for sexually exploiting an 11-year-old girl.
Presiding Justice S. M. Shu’aibu found Isa guilty on a one-count charge of sexual exploitation. The defendant, who resides in Darmanawa Bayan Gidan Kallo in the Tarauni Local Government Area, pleaded guilty to the charge.
Justice Shu’aibu stated that the Prosecution Counsel, Abdullahi Babale, successfully proved the case beyond a reasonable doubt, leading to the seven-year sentence without the option of a fine. Isa was also ordered to pay N1 million in compensation.
The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Kano State Command, had alleged that the offense occurred in Darmanawa Quarters, Tarauni LGA, on October 5. According to Babale, Isa lured his neighbor’s 11-year-old daughter into his wife’s room, where he exploited her.
Babale informed the court: “The defendant had sex with the survivor on three different occasions,” specifying that one incident took place in his wife’s room and two in an uncompleted building. He also noted that Isa provided the survivor with bread, groundnut, and N20 before the exploitation.
The prosecution presented two key pieces of evidence, including Isa’s confessional statement and the survivor’s testimony. Babale emphasized that the offense violated Section 16(1) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015, which is punishable under Section 26(1) of the same Act.
