Kwara Police Charge Dismissed Officers Over Student’s Death

The Kwara State Police Command has charged three dismissed police officers to court in connection with the fatal shooting of a student during a protest.

According to a statement released by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, Abiodun Kayode, James Emmanuel, and Oni Philip were charged with criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide. The officers are accused of being involved in the death of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, an ND2 Electrical/Electronics Engineering student at Kwara State Polytechnic.

Ishola was allegedly shot and killed by police officers during a protest against fuel price hikes in the Fate area of Ilorin on September 4, 2024.

Following widespread public outcry, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, ordered the transfer of the case to the police headquarters in Abuja for further investigation.

The dismissed officers have been remanded in prison custody pending the outcome of their trial.
