Libya Faces CAF Pressure Over AFCON Match Cancellation

The Libyan Football Federation is under pressure from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to provide documentation explaining the cancellation of their AFCON qualifying match against Nigeria.

The Super Eagles refused to play the match after their plane was diverted to Labraq Airport and detained for over 18 hours without essential amenities. Following this ordeal, the team returned to Nigeria, boycotting the match.

According to Libya Al-Ahrar Channel, the Libyan Football Federation’s Secretary-General, Nasser Al-Suwaie, confirmed in a statement that CAF has given Libya and Nigeria until October 20th to submit relevant documents regarding the incident.

Al-Suwaie revealed that the Libyan FA has appointed a legal expert to provide evidence and expressed concerns about potential collusion within CAF.

He emphasised that the Libyan Federation’s position is strong and that it did not influence the plane’s landing at Al-Abraq Airport. The decision to divert the plane was made by the Libyan state, and Al-Suwaie stressed the importance of respecting Libyan sovereignty.

The Super Eagles’ return to Nigeria on Monday marked the end of their involvement in the AFCON qualifying match, which was ultimately cancelled due to the unacceptable airport ordeal.
