Moses Remayi, a married man from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after violently assaulting his girlfriend, leading to her death.
The tragic incident was sparked by Remayi’s suspicion of infidelity when his girlfriend missed a call from an unknown number, which he believed was from another man.
The confrontation escalated when Remayi became enraged after his girlfriend refused to answer the call. During the argument, he called the number himself and a man answered, further fueling his anger.
“I dialed the number using my phone, and a man answered. This made me angry, as I suspected she was cheating on me,” Remayi testified in court.
In a brutal attack, Remayi assaulted his girlfriend with a steel chair, fists, and feet, locking the door to continue the violence for nearly an hour.
A co-tenant, Evidence Denhere, recounted hearing the victim’s screams but being unable to intervene due to the locked door. “No one could stop him as he had locked the door,” Denhere said.
After the assault, a neighbor, Cynthia Chaleka, discovered the woman severely injured and half-naked. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she succumbed to her injuries days later.
Remayi was arrested by police, who found the iron bar used in the attack. In his defense, he claimed the violence started when his girlfriend bit him during the argument, but the court dismissed his explanation and found him guilty of murder.
In front of Bulawayo High Court Judge Justice Evangelista Kabasa, Remayi received an 18-year prison sentence, despite pleading not guilty.
The local community has been shocked and outraged by the brutality of the attack, and Remayi now faces nearly two decades behind bars for his actions.
